Dale,
I broke down and bought a bike jack at Sams (about $100); don't think I'd want to lift a heavy bike on it, but it works fine for the Savage.
Here's my old method.
-I used two ratcheting tie downs to secure the bike upright (I hooked them off to my automatic garage door rails) between two fixed points.
-Use any old jack (like your car's) to get her up in the air (for the front, jack under the case; for the rear, jack under the horizontal frame piece that comes across just forward of the rear tire).
-Once you get her in the air, use scrap wood to hold her there (NEVER work on something that is on a jack- they can fail and squash you).
